Literature Text

I'll be here when the planets collide,
when the stars rise and the moon hides.
I'll call your name through the fog,
hold your hand and guide you
when your eyes have tired of seeing
the hurt and hopeless.
I'll keep hold of your dreams, shining,
and show them to you when you feel like
you're reaching for what's gone.

I'll be the one to smile when you come home,
to listen with all I have.
My arms are your refuge
when you fall,
when you tire,
when I can't give you anything else,
when that is all you need.

I'll be the one to whisper love
and shout your joy.
I'll be the first from noon till nigh.
I'll be the keeper of your heart,
always willing
to let go
when you need to fly.

I'll be the music of our dance,
the candle for our flame
we light again and again.

Please
let me be the shine in your eyes,
the quickness in your step,
the one
you'll never have to fear.

Let me be
the one who lets you dream.

Let me be-
not your one and only-
the one who brings it all into focus.

Because you are
Why I choose to believe,
the reason I survive.

I'll be there when the planets collide,
with you always
in my heart.
I was suddenly struck by the opening line of this poem while waiting for a school assembly to start. A flood of images came after that: an elderly couple holding hands on a park bench, a young couple watching a movie, one person holding the other while they cried, and many others. I wanted to express those sentiments of love and show that love isn't always grand gestures. It's being the one that your love can always count on and the one who makes them want to be a better person, for you, for them self, and for everyone around them.

One day, I'd like to give this poem to someone and say that although I wrote it years ago, I'd only just fallen in love with who it was meant for.

Beautiful phrases and word choice. Truly lovely.
